State lines are a poor guide to gardening. Arizona and Alabama are both American, and almost nothing you would plant in one belongs in the other. Alabama and Mississippi want much the same garden. Climate ignores borders, so this guide is organised by climate region — the honest structure, and the one that changes what you actually plant. Each region gets its USDA zone span, the constraint that drives design there, and plants that suit it. Then the part nobody can shortcut, finding your own conditions, and the principles that hold everywhere.

Finding Your Zone, and Why It Is Not Enough

Enter your postcode at the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map (planthardiness.ars.usda.gov). It returns a zone and a half-zone letter — 6a, 8b. Zones are 10°F bands of average annual extreme minimum winter temperature, each split into 5°F halves. The map was revised in 2023 using a recent thirty-year record, and many places moved up half a zone.

Now the important part. That number describes one thing: roughly how cold your coldest night gets in an average winter. It says nothing about summer heat, humidity, how much rain falls or in which months, the length of the growing season, or your soil. Parts of coastal Oregon and parts of the Houston area both sit around zone 9, and almost nothing thriving in one would survive the other. The zone is a floor, not a description.

Three things fill the gap:

Two caveats. Your garden is probably not the zone the map gives it: a south-facing wall, a frost pocket at the foot of a slope or a wind funnel between houses shifts conditions by a full zone. And soil kills more plants than winter does. Dig a hole, fill it with water, and time the drainage before you buy anything.

The Regions in Detail

Pacific Northwest — west of the Cascades

Zones 7–9 in the lowlands from the Willamette Valley through Puget Sound to the coast, 6 in cold pockets; east of the Cascades is a different climate, covered under Mountain West. The reputation for rain misleads: winters are wet and mild, summers properly dry, and most losses are winter root rot in heavy glacial clay, not cold. Mound or raise beds rather than dig into that clay, and expect to irrigate July to September.

California / Mediterranean

Zones 8–10: 9 to 10 on the coast, 9 through the inland valleys, 8 in the foothills. Rain falls November to April, then stops. Dry-summer natives resent summer water at the crown, so keep irrigated beds physically separate from the dry palette rather than mixing them on one valve. Near the wildland interface the first few metres out from the wall are gravel, paving and low succulents, not resinous shrubs — a firebreak first, a border second.

Desert Southwest

Zones 9–10 in the low desert around Phoenix, Tucson and Palm Springs; 7–8 higher, at Albuquerque or on the high Mojave. Soils are alkaline and often underlain by caliche. Aridity is the constraint but shade is the response: build the plan around a canopy tree or a ramada on the west side and plant beneath it, rather than dotting specimens across open ground nobody will stand on. Grade so monsoon runoff feeds sunken planted basins.

Mountain West / High Plains

Zones 3–6 — valley floors 5–6, higher ground 3–4 — across the Colorado Front Range, Wyoming, Montana, interior Idaho, eastern Washington and the western Dakotas. Wind is the driver: a windbreak on the prevailing side converts unusable ground into a sheltered outdoor room and does more for survival than any soil improvement. The danger is not the January minimum but the February warm spell that breaks dormancy, so site broadleaf evergreens on north and east aspects. Expect late frosts, alkaline soil and hail.

Upper Midwest / Northern Plains

Zones 3–5 across Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas and upper Michigan. Snow is a design material, not a nuisance. Decide where it will be piled before planting anything, because the pile lands on whatever sits beside the drive and the salt in it kills that plant within three winters. Second, the garden must read for five months without leaves, so composition rests on bark, berry, conifer form and standing grasses rather than flower.

Midwest / Great Lakes

Zones 4–6 across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, lower Michigan and western New York. Heavy clay and repeated freeze-thaw define the work. Amend the whole bed, not the planting hole: a hole of good soil dug into clay is a bucket and the plant drowns in it. Freeze-thaw then heaves shallow-rooted perennials clean out of the ground, which is why you mulch after the soil has frozen — to keep it frozen, not to keep it warm.

Northeast / New England

Zones 6–7 along the coast and through southern New England, dropping to 3–5 inland and in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — a wide span, and the two halves want different plants. Hard-landscape detailing drives design here more than planting: footings below frost depth, paving set so meltwater escapes, nothing brittle overhanging a path where wet snow will bring it down. Road salt rules out the obvious street-frontage choices, and deer pressure, not the zone, decides much of the rest.

Mid-Atlantic

Zones 6–8: roughly 8 on the tidewater coastal plain, 7 across the piedmont, 6 up-country toward the Appalachians. The region gets both seasons at full strength: humid subtropical summers stacked on genuine winters. Build permanent structure from plants tolerating both extremes and treat anything marginal as a seasonal experiment, because a great many plants sold here survive the winter perfectly and then rot in August. Clay is heavy and deer pressure high.

Southeast / Humid Subtropical

Zones 7–9 across inland Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Arkansas. Humidity and its fungal pressure set the rules, which makes airflow a design tool: space plants for the width they will actually reach, hold beds off the house wall so air moves behind them, and irrigate at the root rather than over the foliage. Warm nights are the other constraint — plants needing a cool night to recover sulk here however hardy they are.

Gulf Coast

Zones 8b–10a from the Texas coast through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle. The design question is not only what grows but what falls: keep brittle-wooded trees outside falling distance of the roof, favour deep-rooted species with flexible canopies near the house, and never plant a large tree where failure has one direction to go. Beds and paving must shed and dry after inches of rain in an hour, which in gumbo clay means raised beds.

Florida / Subtropical

Zones 9–11: 10 to 11 south of Lake Okeechobee, 9 through central and north peninsular Florida. No reliable winter chill changes the design, not merely the plant list: deciduous structure and spring bulbs do not happen, so composition rests on form, texture and foliage contrast held year-round. Temperate habits fail. Sandy soil holds neither water nor nutrients, making organic matter and mulch an ongoing input, not a one-off amendment. Check a plant's invasive status before buying.

What Does Not Change Anywhere

Everything above is about survival. None of it makes a garden good. The principles below decide whether the space works, and they are identical in Maine and Miami — only the plants expressing them differ.

Get the region right and your plants live. Get these right and the garden is worth looking at. Both matter, and only the first half is written on the plant label.

Where to Start

Find your zone, then go past it: get local frost dates from your extension service, dig a drainage hole, and note where the wind and afternoon sun come from.
